Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
When it comes to writing - especially if you have a goal to write a novel, and do so in a month - accountability, techniques, tools, and tips are key. This class offers all of that and more.

Each week, we will focus on different elements that will help us write a novel in a month - and this class will correspond with traditional NaNo months: April, July, and November

Week one: Intro to Novel Writing, time management for attempting to write in a month
Week two: Check in, accountability, creative writing basics
Week three: Check in, tools and techniques of creative writing
Week four: Check in, final thoughts

As a 3 time participant in NaNo, I will be walking students through how to work out a novel in 30 days. The class will meet and interact through the Outschool platform. Students will be able to meet with the teacher in the classroom and by email, and interact with the other students in the classroom. This is where they will be able to comment on each others' projects, and ask each other questions, as well as answer the discussion questions. The teacher will be available throughout the week for questions/concerns/extra support.
Learning Goals
Students will expand their understanding of various aspects of storytelling for novels. We will be discussing basic tips for prewriting, drafting, other tips and tricks of creative writing, including characters and world building, as well as have accountability to keep working on our novels.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
While I do not plan on focusing on any mature material - this is a creative writing class. As such, we will discuss different kinds of literature, different literary stories, different characters, and student stories. I do tailor some of my responses to the students' interests. The stories discussed may include: violence, death, and mystery or other topics of sensitive natures. None of these issues will be the focus, but they may show up in the class in themes of stories. If you have a learner on the younger range of the class, and have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have.
Supply List
A way to write their story/novel (computer or pen/paper).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
