My experience with the IEW curriculum involves attending IEW seminars and obtaining training from "The Institute for Excellence in Writing" through their DVD video series. Plus I have taught IEW writing skills for 20 plus years privately and in co-ops to elementary, Jr. High, and High School level students.
Homework Novel study: Student homework assignments will consist of prereading chapters before class. Assignments will also include referring to the book in order to complete notebook pages. The information written on the notebook pages will be used to assist the student with oral discussion in class. Amount of time spent reading and completing notebook pages will depend on the student. However, I estimate 2-4 hours a week working on a story. Writing: The student will be required to complete any unfinished writing assignments. Basically, the amount of time spent on writing assignments will depend on the student. However, I estimate 1-2 hours a week working on written assignments. Note: students writing assignments are to be typed, double spaced, Times New Roman #12 font. Essays submitted by the due date will be reviewed. Important, all final papers must be typed and emailed as doc, docx, or Google Docs. *Handwritten papers of any form will not be accepted or reviewed. ***LATE assignments WILL NOT be evaluated*** Grammar: The student homework assignments will consist of completing worksheets which they may have not completed during class time. I estimate 0-1 hour a week working on work sheets.

1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
The novels to be read are fictional works of art and considered classics. Yet, some of the storylines depict the experiences of people with African ancestry in American or other countries. A couple of the books use an inappropriate word and may include religious beliefs. Parents, please pre-read the books and determine for yourself if the books chosen are appropriate for your child. It is extremely important that parents CHECK the CLASSROOM to ensure that the learner is obtaining and submitting assignments on time.
The book Easy Grammar Plus by Wanda C. Phillips is a student workbook and is required for class. This book will be used in Jr. H. Literature Part 1 and Part 2 (cost $14.25 - $20.00). Email me for possible purchase locations.
