In this 5 week class, learners will complete a novel study on The Kid in the Red Jacket. As they read the book, learners will use critical thinking skills, analyze characters and how they change, and learn why friendship is so important.
Class experience
Over a period of 5 weeks, learners will read and discuss The Kid in the Red Jacket using critical thinking skills to deepen their understanding of the story. They will answer questions about the story, compare and contrast characters and events, and summarize what they read. Students will compare and contrast characters and events in the story. Students will summarize the chapters and the story. Students will look for descriptive details in the story to form pictures in their mind. Students will learn about and look for examples of different literary devices in the story. Students will learn the importance of friendship and kindness through the characters in the story. Students will learn a little about geography in the USA.
I have been an elementary classroom teacher for 18 years. I have taught this novel study many times to my 3rd graders in Reading.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be introduced to a little girl who comes from foster care and lives with her grandmother. Some different situations and reasons for children who are in orphanages or foster care may be talked about.
I will upload novel study sheets to the classroom each class to use for our discussion and activities.
