Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is often referred to as the "Great American Novel" and has been beloved for generations. It is a witty adventure tale of good-hearted but mischievous Huck and his friend Jim, a runaway slave. They stick together as they run away from their old lives by rafting down the Mississippi river.

In this one-time course students will participate in meaningful discussion as we chat about the book and its themes together. Conversation based courses are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. Students will need their own copy of the text to complete the book before attending class. We will explore the text and its themes through discussion. Class will be conducted in a casual, conversational style with plenty of time for exploring the book.
Learning Goals
Students will sharpen their literacy skills and foster their love of reading!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is set in the American south before the civil war. It was written in 1885 and is a product of its time. With this in mind, there is lots of language that is offensive today. Slavery is also discussed in detail from the lens of the time. The text reveals the prevalence of racism at the time. There is also some violence at times. Almost one year on Outschool and loving every minute of it!

I am passionate about building authentic positive relationships with my students. By modeling healthy relationships and creating a safe place for them to flourish, I hope to give my students life skills beyond the content I teach. I create safe, inviting spaces for kids to build relationships with other students, practicing the skills of empathy in the context of a caring community.

My husband and I have two daughters and two dogs. I love to read, bake, and knit (but not all at the same time!). I can't wait to see you in class!
