Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
A 6 week Book Club/Novel Study of a Natural-Born Cynic, Flora & Super-Hero Squirrel, Ulysses Duo- this Newbery Winning Novel is a laugh out loud story with eccentric and endearing characters in an exciting format- a novel interspersed with comic-style graphic sequences.
Read on your own, participate in some Guided Reading during class, and analyze character development through engaging class discussions. Students will need to have access to a copy of the book and be willing to have cameras on for participation.
Lessons will focus on the in-depth character development by the author and illustrator through description and dialogue. Characters’ actions, words, and motives give clues to their personalities. Fictionalized characters can be windows and mirrors for our own characters- who we are and who we want to be!
Each lesson will be concentrated on portions of the text so that reading the assignments before class is recommended, but not necessary. Students are still invited to attend class whether or not they’ve been able to complete weekly reading assignments.
Learning Goals
Students will analyze how and why individuals develop and interact over the course of a text.
Students will identify the ways characters are developed by the author through description and dialogue.
