Class Experience

This is a 6 week class where the students will read through chapters of The Chalice of the Gods each week. Each class we will be discussing the chapters we read, going over vocabulary for the chapters and answering discussion questions. Every student will need a copy of The Chalice of the Gods: Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan and each week they will need to read the chapters before the next class. Students are expected to actively participate during class and with the assigned reading and discussion questions each week.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to establish their own thoughts while reading a book and sharing them with others. We will be looking at new vocabulary for each of the chapters and discussing what we think about what has happened, is happening and will happen as we move through the book.

Parental Guidance
Parents need to know that The Chalice of the Gods is technically the sixth book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, but chronologically the Heroes of Olympus series takes place between Book 5 (of Percy Jackson and the Olympians) and this book, and The Trials of Apollo series comes right after this book. To keep up with the general story, you really only have to read The Lightning Thief, but the more Percy you read, the more references to other adventures and characters you'll understand, and there are many. As usual, the demigods face threats to their lives, but most have a silly fantasy bent. Killer chickens and poisonous horned serpents give chase. An angry god threatens death in a wrestling match and another angry god tries to drown Percy in a whirlpool. Messages will feel profound to kids embarking on big life changes like Percy, who is a senior and contemplating moving away for college. He embraces getting older and reminds us of the joys of family dinners, smoothies with friends, and other daily rituals.
Pre-Requisites
Learns will need to have read the other 5 books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series.

Hi I am Teacher Kaylyn and I have been working with children in many different ways for over 15 years in many different ways. Most recently I have taught online for online since 2019, teaching ESL and here on Outschool. I have a 6 year old son and I am used to high energy fun. I love to make learning fun and I want to share my interests with others. Since I do have a young son I love to teach young students. It is great when they figure something out and you can see something click. I love to read and I really like to do book studies to share that love with others. I have learned that to start a passion for reading you need to find the right books that you can't put down. I want to help others to their own books they are passionate about. I love to make candies and my family loves it when I do also; they get all the samples. I hope to see you in class soon!
