In this 6 week class, students will read Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. We will discuss the themes found in the book, vocabulary and our thoughts.
Class experience
This is a 6 week class where the students will read through chapters of Island of the Blue Dolphins each week. Each class we will be discussing the chapters we read, going over vocabulary for the chapters and answering discussion questions. Every student will need a copy of Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell and each week they will need to read the chapters before the next class. Students will learn to establish their own thoughts while reading a book and sharing them with others. We will be looking at new vocabulary for each of the chapters and discussing what we think about what has happened, is happening and will happen as we move through the book.
Each student will need a copy of Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell.
Parents need to know that Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O'Dell, is a lyrical survival story of a Native American girl who at age 12 is left on an island off the California coast in the 1800s and must get along on her own for several years among wild animals, rugged conditions, and natural disasters. This historical novel won the 1961 Newbery Medal. There's one battle scene, and the main character must kill to survive. Wild dogs and dangerous invaders constantly threaten. Karana witnesses the deaths of her father and little brother. A boy is killed by wild dogs.
