I absolutely love this book and the positive themes it helps teach students. I’ve taught it many times and always learn new things through the students’ eyes. I am able to use this story to teach many important elements of literature. The story is so appealing that students can't wait to see what happens next!
Students will need a copy of the book Holes by Louis Sachar. This can be purchased on Amazon or borrowed from your local library They will also need paper and pencil or a notebook for writing I will provide handouts and graphic organizers as we go
In the book, there is a flashback to the 1800s and a black man gets killed for kissing a white woman. There are no details that make it violent, but it is talked about. Because of this part of the plot, there will be a lesson on racism and Jim Crow laws. Please let me know if you would like to see the presentation we will be using during this lesson.
