Jane Austen is one of the most influential novelists in English literature. Her characters have remained just as charming and thought provoking as when they were originally written. In this 15 week class, we will read and analyze three of Austen's most famous works: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. Through teacher directed but student led discussion, students will search for societal and emotional themes still relevant to today. Because of the length of the novels, students will read the majority of the text before each session and come prepared for class discussion. I am a devoted fan of Jane Austen, and I hope my energetic approach to literature will help your student fall in love with this delightful British novelist.
