Novel Studies of Classic Novels

In this ongoing course, students will be reading classic novels such as, "Treasure Island", "The Great Gatsby", and others. While reading, the students will conduct a novel study for each novel.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
In this multi-day course, students will read a variety of books and begin a novel study for each book. The teacher will assign chapters for the students to read individually and then discuss as a class during the weekly meeting. Weekly, students will be completing questions pertaining to the chapters and discussing the chapters read. 

Other than class discussion and read-aloud of a particular text, the following formats of activities will be used: google docs and other google software will be used for students to jot dot their notes or answers to particular questions. 

Learners should at least be willing to learn and engage for an hour per week, as well as read at least two-four chapters (chapters are short) outside of class on occasion. 

Prerequisite Skills: late 3rd-grade through the 5th-grade reading level is preferred with some flexibility

Below is a layout of the syllabus that the students will be receiving on the first day of class. 

Week 1: Introduction to the class and the novel: Jungle Book
Week 2: Begin reading Chapters 1 and 2
- Assign Chapters 1-2
Week 3: Discuss chapters 1-2
- Assign chapters 3-4
Week 4: Discuss chapters 3-4
- Assign chapters 5-6
Week 5: Discuss chapters 5-6
- Assign chapters 7-8
Week 6: Discuss chapters 7-8
- Assign chapters 9-10
Week 7: Discuss chapters 9-10
- Assign chapters 11-12
Week 8: Discuss chapters 11-12
- Assign chapters 13-14
Week 9: Discuss chapters 13-14
Week 10: Take assessment on Jungle Book

**After Week 9, the teacher will have a new novel study chosen and will inform students of choice so they may purchase if need be**.

A one page handout will be provided on the first day of class showing what chapters will be assigned per week.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson: $4-$20 on Amazon depending which copy you buy**

**Treasure Island is the only novel to be bought for now until Week 9 of the course where the teacher will inform students of new novel.
