US Grade 4 - 7
Writing your thoughts down in a concise and comprehensive manner is a key literary skill to acquire. In this class, students learn to take good notes based on what they hear, read or see and then turn it into a short and concise summary paragraph. In each class, students will learn to take notes on material they read/listen to and then summarize the various forms of literature they will be exposed to. Homework will include practicing what was learned in class by taking notes and summarizing what was read. Class 1: Note-taking of a Non-Fiction Piece. Class 2: Note-taking of a Fictional Short Story Class 3: Summary - What is it? Why is it important? How do we do it? Each class will be led via a slideshow, lecture, short readings and live, in-class discussion. This will be followed by a student written piece assessed by the teacher (not for grade, but for improvement). Students should read at a 3rd/4th grade level to be able to get the most out of this class.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their reading skills, note taking skills and summarizing skills. Teacher will guide the students in how to take good notes and then allow for practice time and homework. Teacher will then assess and give feedback to students to help improve.
