Class Experience

The teacher says, "Take out a sheet of paper and take notes on this video/lecture/text." Is your instinct to panic? Do you immediately think, "Notes? HOW do you take notes?"

Then THIS class is for you!

During this 55 minute class, students will discover the when, why, and how of note taking. Once they understand when it is appropriate to take notes, why note taking is a beneficial skill that will serve them in the long run, and how to determine what to include in their notes, next comes skill acquisition.

Strategies are so important that students will spend 30 of the 55 minutes learning about five different note taking strategies:
Outlining
T-Charts
Cornell notes
Question and Answer
Mapping

A brief overview of each strategy will be covered with examples and suggested subject areas where one strategy may work better than another. Students will be encouraged to take notes during this class, to practice the skills they are learning. The class is taught via slides, videos, discussion, and lecture.

Class concludes by asking students to reflect on which strategy (or strategies) they will implement moving forward.

This "basic" class is intended for learners who are new to or struggle with taking effective notes.

Learning Goals

Students will understand when, why and how note taking skills are a necessary part of the classroom experience, and how note-taking contributes to studying and long term academic success.
