Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Often students are expected to take notes in class without knowing HOW to take notes. The goal for this class is for students to see note taking as a necessary skill set that supports their learning now and throughout their educational journey. Establishing these critical habits strengthens their investment in their education and bolsters their confidence.

In this introductory class, we will discuss note taking as a resource that makes learning more effective, saving them time and energy. Students will be introduced to different methods and learn how to "customize" their notes in ways that work for them. With slides to supplement a lecture, I will discuss the merits of this essential practice and offer tips, tricks, and suggestions to support a student's knowledge of how and when to take notes. Questions and comments are encouraged to allow for an interactive discussion. We will wrap up our class with a trivia game to show off what we have learned about taking notes.

As this is an inclusive space, all students are welcome. If your student has special abilities or requires accommodations, please let me know.

PLEASE NOTE: I now offer a follow-up class entitled, "Note Taking 102" which gives students an opportunity to practice using the methods and strategies discussed in Note Taking 101.

Learning Goals

Students will become better equipped to take notes and understand its value in comprehending information.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree from University of South Carolina
I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults within the educational and mental health systems. While in graduate school, I was a part-time college instructor which ignited my passion for teaching. I then became a mental health therapist, working in residential facilities as well as in the community. For the past six years, I have taught students online, which has been rewarding and challenging in ways that continue to inspire me.

Along with being a teacher, I am also a writer. I have had two short stories published, and I continue to regularly submit material. For three years, I had a blog that included my short stories, reviews, and opinions on various issues. Other examples of my writing experience consist of curriculums for an independent living program, program descriptions, numerous website articles, as well as online advertisements. I enjoy sharing my passion for writing with students and hearing about what inspires them. I strive to provide a supportive atmosphere for my students, allowing them to harness and express their creativity in ways unique to them.

Throughout my educational and professional careers, I have implemented various tools in my own life to create and maintain a system of learning, organization, and balance. After successes and failures alike, I now believe the knowledge of "how to learn" is a skill that serves us well after we graduate from school. I enjoy sharing these valuable skills with students who may discover a new way to be productive, feel confident as they plan for their future, and apply them to different parts of their lives for the rest of their lives.
