What's included

Homework
1 hour per week. Assignments require 15 to 45 minutes of writing outside class time, plus a weekly quiz to check understanding (less than 5 minutes). The class is 6 weeks long, so there are 6 assignments.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This is a 6-week writing class that will introduce you to new types of writing that are used in the real world! It is recommended that you take Part 1 of this class first, but it is also possible to take Part 2 independently.

We will not write any traditional essays in this class (although grammar, sentence structure, organization and research skills are always important in writing). Instead, this class will be focused on writing for real-world scenarios, with special emphasis on how to write appropriately in today's digital, online medium.

CLASS TOPICS (a new genre each week):
*  Online listicle
*  Writing for a podcast
* Technical writing for the public (explaining science or technical topic to a general audience)
* Formal email request (for a recommendation, or to apply to a job)
* Preparing to interview someone, and writing an article with the interview included

CLASS FORMAT:
Each week, learners will watch a short video introducing a real-world genre of writing. The video outlines the purpose of the genre, and how to write specifically for that purpose, including technical aspects like hyperlinking, openings and endings, etc. Learners follow the video by taking notes on a worksheet, then take a short quiz to assess their own understanding. The goal of the videos is to help learners identifying the important features of each genre, and how to avoid making mistakes when writing that genre.

Learners should complete a required writing task each week (estimated 15-45 minutes to complete each assignment). I respond to all assignments with direct feedback!

LEARNING GOALS:
  - Understand the technical aspects and conventions of writing email or writing on digital platforms
  - Use appropriate tone and vocabulary
  - Know which terms of address to use for a letter, email or other communication
  - Learn how to embed a hyperlink or file
  - Know how to avoid blunders in writing for the internet or online media

-----
PLEASE NOTE:
* Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure etc. are not the focus of this class; it is assumed that those are covered in English/ELA classes.
* The weekly video and quiz take between 20-40 minutes. Each weekly assignment requires between 15-45 minutes of writing outside class time.
* This is not a completely self-paced class. Lesson videos are posted weekly, and written assignments are due each week.
* The refund policy for this class is "Flexible" (the most flexible option). You may withdraw and obtain a full refund until the day of the first class. After the first class, refund is prorated based on the number of weeks that have passed.
