Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Enjoy and learn about literary classics without all the reading! This is a "book study", but it is aimed at those who struggle with or simply dislike reading long amounts of text. For this class students have a choice of reading a graphic novel (aka "comic book"), listening to an audiobook or podcast, or even watching a video of one of the many adaptations of Dickens' beloved "A Christmas Carol". This class is an ideal format for students who are dyslexic or have other issues that make reading text difficult or for non-native English learners. While there will be some reading involved, it will be minimal and scaffolded by instruction.

Each week we will discuss what happens in one of the "Staves" of the story and analyze the characters, setting, plot, theme, etc. of the novel. We will also compare and contrast Dickens' time to modern times, look at adaptive works based on this classic, and students will be given an opportunity to create their own alternate interpretation of the story as a play, animation, podcast, vlog, or other short performance.

Learners will choose how they want to access the story: graphic novels (three different levels of text available), listening to an audiobook or podcast, watching a video adaptation, or any combination of the three. The teacher will provide information on how to obtain these resources before the class begins. The price range for the resources is from $0-25, depending on what you choose.

Lesson 1 - Introduction and Stave 1
Lesson 2 - Stave 2 / Characters
Lesson 3 - Stave 3 / Setting
Lesson 4 - Stave 4 / Plot
Lesson 5 - Stave 5 / Theme
Lesson 6 - Wrap up and presentation of projects
Learning Goals
Hopefully, students will learn about and appreciate a literary classic without having to be bogged down in the mechanics of reading. They will learn how to analyze a story and how to synthesize that into their own ideas and creativity to produce an alternate re-telling of the story.

I have previously taught this class in a workshop format. Many students enjoyed making up their own Dickens story, but some struggled with actually reading the text. My experience in teaching students with learning challenges has inspired me to create this version so that these students can also be exposed to literary classics and enjoy creating their own stories.
