Not Your English Teacher's Dickens - "A Christmas Carol"

Class
Sally Morris - Tech/SPED
Average rating:4.8Number of reviews:(208)
This is a Dickens "alternative" book study using graphic novels, audio, or video to access the story.

Class experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Hopefully, students will learn about and appreciate a literary classic without having to be bogged down in the mechanics of reading. They will learn how to analyze a story and how to synthesize that into their own ideas and creativity to produce an alternate re-telling of the story.
I have previously taught this class in a workshop format. Many students enjoyed making up their own Dickens story, but some struggled with actually reading the text. My experience in teaching students with learning challenges has inspired me to create this version so that these students can also be exposed to literary classics and enjoy creating their own stories.
Homework Offered
Students will be expected to read/listen to/watch one Stave per week on their own time.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
The assessment will be informal. Additional assignments/grades can be given for those who need it.
Grades Offered
Students will need to obtain a copy of Dickens "A Christmas Carol" as a graphic novel, audiobook or podcast, or video. I will be sending out a list with links and prices where you can order these or you obtain them on your own. Prices range from $0 to $25.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Dickens' tale deals with death and the supernatural. Parents may want to use guidance on some of the video adaptations of the tale, as their ratings may vary.
