Class Experience

This ongoing course is designed for learners who have established a nonprofit organization, philanthropic project or have an idea that is in the beta stage of testing. This comprehensive course will instruct students on how to create a nonprofit organization in order to take their efforts to the next level. We will cover overall life skills, financial skills, critical thinking, and social skills as a group. Over the course this class, students will begin by choosing a community issue they wish to solve and will leave know how to either: incorporate, patented or establish a working relationship with an existing organization based on their idea. I will be available during office hours, one-on-one/group appointments, and will post twice a week to make sure each student is succeeding in their nonprofit goals.

Classmates will work together to practice pitching their ideas through group meetings.... Shark Tank style! Classmates will also participate in quiz games to learn nonprofit vocabulary such as, "Profit and Loss Statement, Fiscal Sponsorship, Volunteers, Board of Directors, etc."

Information that will be covered in this course includes: market/competition research, trademarking, fiscal sponsorship, incorporation depending on a student's advancement, and pitch decks/mission statements.

Samples of class days include:
-Week of 10/04/2021: Introduction on goals for this class/background of successful youth nonprofits
- Week of 10/11/2021: Ideas, each student will create a 5 slide deck that will be reviewed by peers
- Week of 10/18/2021: Testing, each student will learn how to successfully test their idea in the community
- Week of 10/25/2021: Market research, students will learn how to research if ideas close to theirs already exist and how to pivot and adapt accordingly.

As a youth founder of a nonprofit organization myself, I have gained real world knowledge on how to navigate philanthropy as a young person and how to gain funding for my personal idea. Students will participate in group projects and will support each other in their entrepreneurial efforts!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Katherine Powell and I look forward to seeing your child in class!

I am a certified English as a second language teacher, holding three years of experience as an online instructor specializing in students ages 3 to 12. I am also currently completing my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Columbia University. Go Lions!

At age 17, I joined a delegation of youth ambassadors who participated in global youth-led assemblies at the United Nations, and at age 21, I founded a nonprofit organization called She Rises. She Rises provides at-risk female youth, ages 14 to 18, mentorship, career, and personal planning to complete their education and lead positive adult lives away from past traumas.

Through my work at She Rises, the United Nations, and as an ESL instructor, I have realized my passion for teaching young children about philanthropy and how they can create simple change in their own communities that have lasting outcomes. If we provide our children with knowledge about leading philanthropic lives and remaining connected with social issues, we are able to encourage well-rounded thinkers who can carry these practices into adulthood. As a young founder myself, I look forward to engaging young learners to achieve their goals in the nonprofit field. It is never too early to make a difference!
