This class series is entitled, Nonfiction Matters, because nonfiction is of growing importance as kids get older. During students' 4th grade year, 50% of their reading should be from expository text . By the end of high school, 70% of a student's required reading will be nonfiction. Many students are not equipped with the skills needed to comprehend difficult nonfiction texts. I am an experienced elementary teacher and reading specialist.
Students will complete their writing assignments at home, if not finished in class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will assess students informally through class discussion, student answers, and written responses. I will also give a standards based assessment on the last day of class.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
All material is appropriate for upper elementary students.
