Class Experience
This class series is entitled, Nonfiction Matters, because nonfiction is of growing importance as kids get older. During students' 4th grade year, 50% of their reading should be from expository text . By the end of high school, 70% of a student's required reading will be nonfiction. Many students are not equipped with the skills needed to comprehend difficult nonfiction texts. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.3 Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.
I am an experienced elementary teacher and reading specialist.
Optional homework will be given for students who would like to have extra practice outside of class.
2 files available upon enrollmentI will post printable pdfs for students to use during class. If you aren't able to print the materials, students may use paper and pencil instead to record answers.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The student will be assessed informally through discussion and answers to questions. A standards based assessment will also be given at the end of the course.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
All material is appropriate for upper elementary students.
