Over 8 classes, students will learn in action how to approach creating distinct characters with their voices and bodies. They'll practice being seen, heard, and understood while performing in a musical that's as educational as it is fun.

Class experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will increase confidence exploring their vocal instrument.
Students will increate confidence communicating character traits with their bodies.
Each student will recognize his or her strengths and have strategies to utilize them in creating character.
By the end of the course, students will have each created a character or two with distinct vocal and physical characteristics that differ from his or her own. He or she will also be able to explain some of the techniques he or she is utilizing.
In addition to acting over 20 leading roles ranging from Donna in "Mamma Mia" to The Witch in "Into the Woods," I've assisted actors in creating director characters vocally and physically as the director and / or musical director for such shows as "Once Upon a Mattress," "Schoolhouse Rock, Live," "Kiss Me, Kate," "Disney's Beauty and the Beast," "Chicago," "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," and "Shrek."

I trained my voice extensively as an actor and singer while earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and a minor in theatre from New Mexico State University. I've been guided by over 20 directors with varied techniques for movement and voice for at least a dozen companies in New Mexico, Texas, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. I earned a Master of Education degree while teaching music and theatre for 15 years.

Of particular use for this course, I've performed in and directed musicals such as "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change," "The Musical of Musicals The Musical," and "Five Course Love" which required me to create numerous distinct characters from scene to scene within one production. (As seen in this highlight video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRyHJRO_WBo )
Students will likely want a highlighter and clothes that comfortably cover them while offering a full range of motion. They will be provided some costume pieces, but will be guided in creatively using things in their home (with permission) for costumes, props, and backdrops.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be provided the scripts I have licensed for a theatrical production.

A playlist of songs from the show. Students will be provided access to mp3s of all 11 songs with and without vocals once enrolled.
