We will start by defining what non-binary means and exploring the theory of gender as a social construct. Then, we will look at many examples of non-binary genders around the world including: - Two-spirit indigenous people - Hijras from India - Waria from Indonesia The lesson will include a lecture with lots of images of cultural expression in different cultures. Learners will be encouraged to ask and answer questions. I will ask them, "How does this affect your understanding of gender?" This course is open to learners of all genders. It may be especially validating for young people who are questioning their gender identity.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am in a graduate program for Applied Anthropology. I have taken several courses on the social construction of gender. With the guidance of my graduate school professors, I studied non-binary genders from many cultures including two-spirit indigenous Americans, Hijras from India, and Waria from Indonesia.
I also worked as a graduate assistant for two years for my thesis advisor helping her with gender studies research. This helped to expand my understanding of the social construction of gender and the existence of non-binary genders in many non-Western cultures. My own graduate research focuses on gender socialization in education and pulls from my study of non-binary genders.
