Description

Class Experience

After completing my class, learners will be able to:

1. Use proteins called "restriction enzymes" to cut DNA.
2. Interpret DNA maps made using restriction enzymes.
3. Design ways to cut and paste DNA molecules together using restriction enzymes.
4. Illustrate the steps of the polymerase chain reaction.
5. Demonstrate how to introduce a specific mutation into a DNA sequence.
6. Define the roles of exons and introns in genes.
7. Describe how CRISPR-Cas9 is used to edit DNA.
8. Design a method to delete or “knock out” a specific gene in a mouse.
During my PhD and scientific work, my research covered life science disciplines as diverse as genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, pathology, and medicine. I formerly worked as a docent for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences doing fun science demos for visitors and school groups of all ages, and served as a judge at the North Carolina State Science Fair.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Upon request, a brief written evaluation will be provided, including recommendations for further study tailored to each student's interests.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
While every effort is made so that the discussion of human diseases are age-appropriate, there will be discussion of how disease can cause pain or discomfort in patients, and in some cases, be fatal. This material may be inappropriate for learners who become anxious or upset by discussion of the aspects of human disease outlined above. In accordance with Outschool policy, this class does not provide medical training or medical services, and should not be used for such a purpose.

The genetics component of the class will include discussion of evolution by natural selection as it relates to the study of biology. Class materials are based on the most up-to-date consensus of the scientific community.

About Me

Hello! My name is Dr. Odessa, and I teach on Outschool because I believe all children are innately curious and born scientists! In fact, research shows that even young children naturally do their own small experiments to test their ideas...
