Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
In this class, students will learn how to answer sentence boundary questions on the SAT. Not every punctuation rule in existence is tested on the SAT, so we'll look only at colons, semicolons, dashes, periods, question marks, quotation marks, and commas (briefly). I cover commas extensively in Lesson 1: Commas. We'll also review different kinds of "non-essential descriptive phrases," so students will learn what makes a phrase "essential" or "non-essential."

Students will take turns reading slides that include the rules, explanations, examples, mnemonic devices, and more. We'll answer SAT-style sentence boundary questions, too. For homework, I encourage students to practice with questions from the College Board Question Bank, available on the College Board website.

Instruction consists of teacher-made instructional material including slide presentations with original questions modeled after the College Board's questions. Additionally, I highly recommend that students purchase this book for homework practice: The Critical Reader: The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar by Erica L. Meltzer. It has a lot of practice for each question type. The student will also use the College Board Question Bank for practice.

In order to see a score increase, it's essential that students not only attend the session but also continue to practice after the class, take practice tests, and, if necessary, study vocabulary on their own. I offer Vocabulady's SAT Vocab Game Night classes on Outschool to help with this. They're fun and effective.

I am patient, kind, empathetic, creative, and flexible, and your success is my goal. I've spent two years studying the reading and writing section of the Digital SAT, and I know what you need to look for when you're answering questions. I can also help you see why the wrong answers are wrong. (And my jokes are hilarious.)

Learning Goals

List rules for colons, semicolons, dashes, and commas.
Join two independent clauses with semicolons.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Punctuation is only scary if you don't know how to use it.
Pre-Requisites
This class reviews comma usage, but doesn't cover them extensively. Lesson 1: Commas focuses on comma usage and essential vs. non-essential descriptive phrases. I recommend that students take both classes (the order isn't important).

After teaching high school French and Spanish for 25 years, I semi-retired and began a second career as a test-prep and academic tutor. I specialize in the reading and writing section of the SAT and ACT. I have studied the Digital SAT reading and writing questions very carefully, and my strategies have helped many students raise their reading and writing scores by ~100 points from one test to the next.
