Class experience

US Grade 8 - 10
Students will be able to discuss, in detail, each film's plot, theme, and choices made by the director. Students will be apple to appreciate and discuss camera & visual techniques, use of music and audio, CGI, and other specific elements of a film. They will use critical thinking and participate in peer discussion to critique each film, including plot, acting, and overall success of the film. They will gain a greater appreciation for all of the aspects of creating a film, and learn to evaluate and enjoy films in a new, more sophisticated way.
After studying fiction writing and loving my film classes in college, I went on to become a media specialist and film teacher in public middle schools. I have been sharing my love of literature and film with students for nearly 20 years.
My favorite memories include sitting around a large table at a restaurant with my college classmates, discussing for HOURS the film that we had just watched that night. As an adult, I was surprised that not everyone is like that--some people just watch a movie, and then go on with their day, never mentioning it much at all, even if they have seen it with friends. That is not me, and one of the reasons why I gravitated toward teaching students how to truly appreciate all of the many aspects that go into making a film, appreciating it for more than just the laughs, action, or tear-jerker ending.
I hope to have young, like-minded teens join me in this passion for film!
Homework Offered
(Optional) Students may choose to read about the making of the weekly movie, research films by the same director or screen writer, or learn about the leading actors of the film. Students are encouraged for the finial class of the month to watch a movie of their own choice, comparing it to others shown during the month, and offer a critique for fellow classmates (and recommendation!)
