News for Families: May 2017

The 24-hr news cycle is full of bias, sensationalism, and just plain noise. How can you help your child be informed and learn about the world? News for families will show you how!

====

News for families is a new series by Mr. Powell of www.historyatourhouse.com. It is for students age 12+. Families with younger students must contact Mr. Powell at mrpowell@historyatourhouse.com before registering.

The goal of the program is to help families make sense of the world around them, by critically assessing what is presented to us in the mainstream media. It's about learning how to ignore the noise, and--in the words of Stephen Covey, world renown author of "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"--keep the main thing the main thing.

Life is not the permanent emergency that the media--including the Weather Channel--would have us believe. How do we stay informed, without being permanently distracted? How do we use the news, rather than being used by it (primarily to sell advertising)?

This class will show you how to compare media sources with an *active* mind -- not an "open mind" (the kind where your brains fall out).

And, of course, it will show students, what the *significance* of news events really is -- in full historical context. Just as the past is usually divorced from the present, making history useless, the news is divorced from the past, making it equally frustrating as a guide to life. What we really need is the combination of the two. In "News for Families," Mr. Powell will put the news in its historical context, helping you to grasp the importance of history as well as the meaning of the day's events.

[This class is the prototype for a new series that will run by monthly subscription starting this summer, and is offered at a 25% discount. Families that participate and enroll in this program will be eligible to keep this reduced rate as a subscription from this point on.]
