As a fun way to play with the life skill of planning for and dreaming about a new year, I've created New Year's Wishes, a class where students will have the opportunity to dream about what they'd most love to have happen in 2021 through the process of journaling. Then students will select 1-3 favorite wishes from what they've written. We'll write each wish at the center of it's own piece of paper and then fold them into Origami stars! Then they can keep their stars all year long to...
Students will write about a journal prompt to discover their wishes for 2021. Students will select 1-3 wishes that feel most important / special to them. Students will fold paper to make origami stars with their wishes written in the middle. Students will share their origami stars (though the wishes can remain private.)
As a life coach, writer, and teacher, I love creating opportunities for students to reflect and explore their own inner thoughts and dreams through writing. Right at the beginning of a New Year feels like a special time to do that, and to get to celebrate and connect with other students.
There is no homework for this class, but students are welcome to continue making origami stars for their other wishes ever after class is done.
Paper and pencil (or pen, etc.) for the journaling, and at least 1-3 pieces of blank paper for folding the origami stars. (These pages can be any color, and do not yet need to be square; I will show students how to do this during class, if needed.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students are assessed based on their participation as well as their kindness and respect in connecting with the other students in class.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Creating meaningful learning experiences where students feel valued and gain the confidence to share their unique gifts, talents & strengths with the world.
