Class Experience

Let's celebrate 2021 in a fun and sweet way. In this interactive storytelling and drawing class, students will celebrate New Year's Day by drawing their own Sweet Potato Queenie.

In the first part of the class, students will listen to me read an original story about Sweet Potato Queenie, a fictional character. Throughout the story time, I will ask questions and have students use their props to engage more in the fictional story. Students should complete the props worksheet prior to class, so they can share their props during the class.

In the second part of the class, students will draw their very own Sweet Potato Queenie. This character is similar to other "Travel Girl" drawing classes that I teach. Students will personalize the character by deciding her hair, earrings, crown and item in hands. Each student will decide patterns and color combinations for his/her picture. Lastly, students will color the picture using color pencils

By the end of the hour, students will have a beautiful Sweet Potato Queenie drawing and know more about the sweet potato pie as a New Year's tradition. As the teacher, I will guide students to create a unique drawing that reflects their personalities and curiosity about Queenie.

Story Summary: Do you know what day is Queenie favorite's day? It's New Year's Day of course. Every year she makes sweet potato pie with her aunt. Unfortunately, this year her aunt can't make it to Queenie's house. What will Queenie do? Will she be able to bake the pie by herself? Will she still have her New Year's Day party? With the help of technology, family and sweet potato growers, Queenie has the best New Year's Day of her life. Join the fun as we celebrate a great start to another new year. 2021 will be the best year yet.
Learning Goals
Student will improve their basic drawing skills by drawing a personalized Queenie character. Students will enhance their critical and creative thinking skills as they complete the drawing and participate in the interactive story class. Lastly, students will better understand the role of sweet potato pie in some American families. ,

I am passionate about teaching appreciation of our world's cultures, societies, and people in a fun and engaging way that will spark a lifelong curiosity about our global community and a desire to be active and productive community members. I would like to work with learners from 6 to 18 years old. I have a degree in Sociology from UCLA, visited more than 30 countries, and lived/taught in five countries. I love to explore our global community from teas to art to traditional clothing.

Since 2005, I have taught English as a foreign language. I have taught in Asia, Central America, South America and North America. I have taught all age levels from young learners to middle school students to college students. For the past five years, I have been teaching English online to very young learners in China.

I believe learning should be fun, interactive and relevant to students' lives. Students should be inspired and encouraged to be active learners and full participants in developing their knowledge of the world.

On a personal note, I have two big dreams that I'm pursuing now. The first is to live in London for a year as a writer. Because of the Covid pandemic, I am not sure when this will happen. The second is to publish The Next Great American Novel. (I have a Master's degree in Nonfiction Writing from USC.)
