Summer reading is critical to a child's ability to not only retain information learned the previous year, but also to grow in knowledge and critical thinking skills for the coming year. Children must read every day to maintain literacy skills and develop new skills. If learning slows down over the summer break, learners can lose some of the academic gains they made during the school year — what educators call the “summer slide.” Daily reading is probably the most important and most obvious way to avoid the "summer slide." Learners should be reading every day, especially during summer breaks from school. Even learners know that summer reading provides benefits that extend well past the summer months, even if they won't admit it to their parents. Reading lots of different books, silently or aloud with someone else, helps learners build phonics skills and read fluently. And, talking about books, answering questions, and re-telling stories helps learners develop their ability to understand language. So, here at NEVER STOP Reading - A Summer Reading Club, I lead by example and learners read together during the summer months while on their summer break. Make reading a part of your learner's summer routine. Keep your learner's mind sharp. Plan now. It's not too early. Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Indiana University
As a former teacher and Principal, my goal was to always get learners to read . . . and love it. As a young learner myself, I always had a book in my hand, day and night and even when I was supposed to be in bed, lights out and asleep. I can still hear my mom saying, "Okay, lights out in there. It's late and there's school tomorrow."
I've taught learners from 4 to adult to read on four different continents, so you can probably see that I love reading and teaching others to read.
It's my goal to select great reading material that hooks learners and increases there curiosity, interest, imagination and causes them to fall in love with reading. It can begin here with your learner on Outschool with "NEVER STOP Reading - A Summer Reading Club." 📚
