55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this hour class, students will learn how to switch a situation from conflict to negotiation, what they need to know to have a successful negotiation, and how to lay the groundwork for future negotiations. By focusing on abandoning zero-sum (winner take all) mindsets, students can turn competitors into collaborators, and by really thinking about controlling the time frame, students can learn to diffuse situations before they become heated. Please note - once a set of siblings is signed up, I will close that class so that only one set of siblings is together in a class. This allows me to personalize each class to the family. I will be sending out information sheets for you to fill out before we meet so that I can learn more about the siblings and what their negotiating challenges have been. The class will be divided into four parts, all of which are designed to be participatory and engaging. Part I - What is Negotiation and how to recognize the signs that an argument can be turned into a negotiation? Part II - Tips and Techniques: Brainstorming Principles that can be used in every Negotiation. Part III - Negotiating Among Ourselves - putting theory into practice (Students will negotiate with each other and with me and we will analyze what went well and what did not.) Part IV - What are we taking away from this class? I teach this age group socratically - I will introduce a concept and ask questions until we reach agreement; I find that students grasp concepts more firmly when things are taught in this manner. Students will be interacting with me and with each other constantly - we will do role playing to learn tips and techniques, and each learner will engage in negotiations throughout the hour. There is no required experience or prior knowledge required. Students who are comfortable participating will get the most out of the class.
Learning Goals
Students will learn that overt conflict can be diffused early by employing negotiation techniques. They will learn that zero-sum techniques do not work in the long term: if you get everything you want and the other person gets nothing, the next time you negotiate with them you will encounter resistance and resentment. The best negotiations conclude with all sides feeling that they have gained something and perhaps given in on something. Negotiations are often about a lot more than is stated - think broadly when trying to get to Yes!
