Students will learn that overt conflict can be diffused early by employing negotiation techniques. They will learn that zero-sum techniques do not work in the long term: if you get everything you want and the other person gets nothing, the next time you negotiate with them you will encounter resistance and resentment. The best negotiations conclude with all sides feeling that they have gained something and perhaps given in on something. Negotiations are often about a lot more than is stated - think broadly when trying to get to Yes!

I have been teaching negotiation since  1993 and have taught over 50 classes to writers, lawyers, agents as well to elementary, middle schoolers and high schoolers. (I am a litigator by training and have served as both Executive Director and General Counsel of The Authors Guild of America. I have taught thousands of writers and agents looking to negotiate book contracts over the past 30 years, and have negotiated on behalf of clients for my entire professional life.
