Class Experience

In this class, we will explore our practice of anime/manga drawing and share them with the rest of the class. The goal of the class is to help your child refocus and reconnect and draw mindfully. It is a free draw class with prompts, so the possibilities are endless.

Your child will be introduced to taking chances, drawing mindfully in a meditative way, and sharing their time with others.

I will have a set of word prompts related to anime, so your child may draw to create a narrative. This is not a how-to-draw class, but practicing mindfulness while free drawing to gain experience and confidence. It's a one-time class. However, it can be taken multiple times. Each practice will help your child be a little more creative, mindful, and open.

Word prompts help guide your child into focusing on a visual concept, while the music will help your child relax and recharge their mind.

In the class, we will:
- Introduction
- Get Ready
- Calm down with a breathing exercise
- Doodle / Draw for 30 minutes to music
- Show / Process Each Piece (volunteer - so not required)
- Say our Good-Bye's

About Me!
I love anime! I have been drawing since I was 12. Sailor Moon was what got me hooked on the genre. Now, I love watching and reading anime/ manga like Cells at Work, Demon Slayer, The Promised Neverland, My Hero Academia, Haikyuu, Sailor Moon, and Studio Ghibli (G-Kids).

About the class:
-This class is best suited for those who like to draw but may need help with time management.
-The class is a free draw format, but students will be able to see my screen should they want some passive guidance.
-This class is for those open to the challenge of pushing themselves a little further.
-Although each class is related to anime, we can speak or chat about other anime shows or manga to express our interest in the genre. I don't expect students to know every show, so it is a great way to expose them to different series or movies.
-Chat is open for conversations about anime and life. However, it will be turned off if Outschool safety policies are not followed. The teacher reserves the right to stop or change the subject as seen fit or flow of the class.
-Students can join my Outside Anime Club for free during attendance in the course. It is a great way to meet others who appreciate the genre. The club is: https://outschool.com/classes/anime-fans-club-lets-share-draw-and-discuss-all-things-anime-and-manga-BuEaWwCD#us6F4xRzBp

Students will have the opportunity to:
- learn to be accepting of challenges in different techniques with a compassionate inner artistic voice
- learn from one another collaboratively, ask questions, show work
- learn to accept getting messy and making mistakes as a way to experiment with finding their voice

Supplies needed each week:
-Anything goes!
I will be using most of the time:
-Sketchbook Journal or paper
-A pencil (mechanical & granite #2)
-A stump (Fingers can work)
-Rulers

Some Things to Mention:
There is no grade or judgment in the class. I ask that each student respect each other's time and input. The main objective is the draw with compassion. Some experience with drawing may help the performance in the classroom.

I ask that each student respect each other's time and input. I do ask that students are not late. Unfortunately, I may not admit students more than 15 minutes late because it is a time-sensitive activity.

For all classes' safety, I asked that all students who are not verified show their faces at the beginning of the course. Those who refuse will be placed in the waiting room or removed from the class.

Thank you so much for considering this course.

Have a wonderful day!

A student's journey can be deeply personal. You may want to discuss privacy issues ahead of class. I hope that students will share and be proud of what they create. While doing our doodles, if you find that your students can not think of good things to say about themselves, gently drop in suggestions. Please let me know of any accommodations I can do ahead of time for your students. If you suspect your student is in any crisis, please speak with their physician or seek help from a counselor.

Hey!
I am Tammy Whelan, and I help my students discover themselves through art!

With over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience and degrees in Psychology, I have created a personalized pedagogical approach to learning for all my students. Being certified and registered as a member of the National Tutoring Association and Yoga Alliance and training in Arts in Health and SEL*F, I am passionate about cultivating a growth mindset that encourages effort and perseverance.

A Personalized Approach
I run an interactive and collaborative classroom, making it a point to try to adapt to my student's learning style, schedule, and needs. My effort is to ensure that my students have feel good about their efforts at the end of each class.

I motivate my students to dive deep and enjoy the very process of creating art rather than simply focusing on the end product. My approach to teaching involves believing in the uniqueness of each child and seeking to connect with and draw out that aspect of theirs into their art.
