Nature's Wonders: Ultraviolet Vision

In class, we’ll discover ultraviolet light by discussing ways the animal kingdom uses it, how scientists understand astronomy with it, and why people can’t see this range of the electromagnetic spectrum. (CEFR B2,C1,C2)

Class Experience

Colors are all around us; we can see them from red to violet. They are part of what is called the electromagnetic spectrum, but people are only able to see a small portion of this spectrum. There are creatures though, like birds and mammals that can see beyond what we can- they can see into the ultraviolet range.

In our one-time class together, we will explore the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Did you know that there are different types of ultraviolet light? We’ll discuss this and the fact that ultraviolet light is right beyond the visible color we see as violet. How seeing in ultraviolet affects the behavior of some animals is fascinating and we will touch on that, plus, some ways scientists use ultraviolet to understand distant planets and galaxies.

We’ll explore:
❈ What ultraviolet light is
❈ Types of ultraviolet light
❈ How some animals use their ultraviolet vision
❈ Ways scientists understand astronomy using ultraviolet light
❈ And much more

This class portrays physics and chemistry in a way that will increase all learners curiosity in these sciences and beyond.

There will be a slideshow presentation presented in the class to highlight the material being covered, along with the opportunity for each learner to share their knowledge and/or discuss the topic. No prior knowledge is needed to join this class. All learners are welcome to come and look into one of nature’s unseen wonders-ultraviolet light!
Learning Goals
After completing the class each learners will be able to:
❈ Describe what ultraviolet light is and its types
❈ Explain how some animals use their ultraviolet vision
❈ Summarize how scientists can use ultraviolet light
