Class Experience

In our one-time class together, we’ll be looking at natural phenomenons that occur in the night sky. These natural events take place during thunderstorms that produce lightning. This class will cover lightning sprites, blue jets, and elves which are transient luminous events. These unique events will open a new exploration into the night sky that will engage learners and quench their curiosity. Learners don’t need any prior knowledge on sprites, blue jets, or elves, but should have a basic grasp on lightning. (If they don’t have a basic knowledge on lightning, I would recommend they take my class “Nature’s Wonders: Extreme Lightning I" before this one.)

During this class we’ll discuss what these phenomenons are and how they are created. Also, we’ll review the major atmospheric layers to help understand where in the atmosphere these phenomenons take place.

Learners will gain a greater understanding of how lightning and thunderstorms affect the sky through some chemistry concepts.

There will be a slideshow presentation presented in class to highlight the material being covered, a short video of actual sprites, along with the opportunity for each learner to share their knowledge and/or discuss these events. These phenomenons that appear in the night sky are more of nature’s wonders.
Learning Goals
After completing this class learners will be able to:

❈ Identify lightning sprites, blue jets, and elves
❈ Understand how these events may or may not be related to lightning
❈ Recognize how these phenomenons are created
❈ Describe the atmospheric layers

Welcome!

It continues to be a privilege to teach on Outschool, and a joy to be able to reach learners around the world. I’m Shelmika or Mrs. Seashell, and I am just as excited to be teaching today on Outschool as I was a year ago.

I was a Homeschool parent of three, but all three of my children have graduated as of May 2023, and now attend different universities across the US. As I enjoyed the daily experience of teaching my children, I also had the opportunity to volunteer as a pre-school teacher. Additionally, at a local school district, I worked as a Social Service Advocate, supporting learners outside the classroom. I have a Bachelor’s of Science degree, and have completed some graduate education coursework as well.

As a teacher, I especially enjoy exploring the world around us through nature studies. Therefore, my Outschool library of classes will mainly include Science/Nature classes. During each class, I enjoy participation from all learners, so discussion is encouraged, and I endeavor to create a safe and relaxed environment with engaging material that will boost a learner’s interest, and thereby their love of learning.

I’m excited to guide your learner on their knowledge quest, and I hope to see them soon on Zoom!

Please contact me if you have any questions or comments. Thank you.
