Class Experience

Nature Study the Charlotte Mason Way is a series dedicated to teaching kids how to appreciate the nature surrounding them, giving them a basis for all future natural sciences classes as well as enriching their daily lives. In this edition of the series, students will get an introduction to North American pond and lake life. We'll learn how to identify common pond and lake inhabitants by sight (and sometimes sound), learn the basics of their behavior (life cycles, diet, etc.), and the importance of pond and lake inhabitants in our ecosystem.

As in all Nature Study the Charlotte Mason Way classes, children are encouraged to take themselves and their devices outside during the lesson if possible so we can all spend time outside experiencing and appreciating nature together. During the lesson, questions, discussion, and participation are all greatly encouraged as well and questions and discussion topics will be posed along with games and activities designed for more engaging and "hands-on" learning. The rest of the lesson students will learn via slides with pictures and videos and occasionally live examples. At the end of the lesson, students will be given ideas for activities to do at home to incorporate what we've learned and to learn more.

All lessons are designed to be flexible enough to see to each learners’ unique needs so that each learner can have the best and most engaging possible learning experience and is able to walk away with a new appreciation for the nature all around them.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching nature study since 2017, teaching both in-person and online. Before that, I worked at the Virginia Living Museum - a local nature museum - teaching children and adults about native animals and plants and their importance in the ecosystem. And before even that, I was the science-obsessed kid in school who had a shelf full of nature guides and spent all her free time in the woods or reading about birds and mushrooms and plants. I have been camping and hiking and foraging for most of my life and know the wilderness of the United States like the back of my hand (especially the southeast) and love teaching others about it and how to appreciate it.
