In this one time class, learn all about bird song! Why do birds sing? Is it possible to identify a bird without actually seeing it? What am I supposed to listen for when identifying birds by ear? Through a little background information and lots of sound and video examples we will answer all of these questions! We will look at spectrographs to visualize bird song, talk about the outliers and exceptions, and practice the methods of birding by ear together to prepare for taking these skills...

Professionally I have accumulated over 3 years of experience working as a Teacher/Naturalist at two different outdoor learning centers. In both roles I taught environmental education programs as school field trips, scout programs, birthday parties, one-off programs, multi-week series, summer camps, and more. I also had the opportunity to create my own curriculum for after school and weekend programming and offered a variety of course options. I have always enjoyed empowering people to find a way to love learning, and I hope to use this collection of experience to share knowledge of nature and inspire learners to explore outdoors through our classes together.
Homework is not required, but I encourage everyone to take what we learn together outside with them after class to extend the lesson!
Optional: Headphones and/or a quiet space would be helpful to hear as clear as possible!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
