This class combines science with art as we learn to keep a nature journal that coincides with the seasons of the year. Every week learners will learn about an element of nature (sometimes with a short video - 2 minutes or less) and document it with drawing and writing a minimum of three scientific facts about the subject in a journal. Subjects consist of animals/insects, plants, and landscapes. I bring my own nature journal to class and show examples of different entries. Learners are...
Students will learn scientific observation in nature, learning how to use their senses and to draw what they observe. They also learn to record their observations and learned facts in writing, alongside their drawn images in their nature journal. We practice social skills as we talk about the weekly subject and share what experiences we have had in nature, as well as the artwork we have in our journals.
A sketchbook or other journal-type notebook without lines, preferable a smaller size that can be transported easily. If learners choose to use watercolors, I highly recommend a watercolor paper notebook. I use regular school pencils for much of the writing and sketching. Art pencils, colored pencils, watercolors, and pastels are all welcome for drawing our subjects. Pens and erasers also come in handy. Bring what you like and we will use it. :)
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
