I am an experienced educator, with over 25 years in the education of children. I have worked for 10 years as a public school teacher. There, I taught various ages of children with a variety of educational needs in my work as a certified special needs teacher & intervention specialist. During my college summers I worked in camp leadership serving inner-city children in an outdoor setting. I currently home-school my 2 teen boys and have for the past 15+ years. I am an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. I have taught nature study classes for homeschool co-ops, private schools and for social organizations. I also work with local parks teaching nature journaling, and leading historical interpretation programs. I have been a distance educator on Outschool since 2016.
Participants will be given a weekly assignment to do in their journals and asked to share their nature journals entries every week. Students don't have to share thier journals but are encouraged to to support their growth as a journaler.
This is what you need: 1 A nature journal : A size that works best for your child to hold comfortably but not too small that it limits their entry. Something without lines and a thicker weight. I like spiral bound because it will stay open when they are in the field. here is a suggestion. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pen-Gear-MAKE-YOUR-OWN-COVER-SKETCH-DIARY-5-5-X-8-5-AFTER-PERFORATION-70CT/600225113 2. Pencils : Several sharpened pencils or mechanical pencils with erasures 3. Colored Pencils: small set 12 to 18 count. You want something with not many pencils because you don't want to be digging through a lot of pencils in the field. We want to keep things simple and accessible. 4. A small bag to carry your journal and supplies in! If everything is together and ready to go... then your are more likely to take it with you when you go out in nature! 5. Water color paint set & a few paintbrushes : A simple dry set. I have seen them at the dollar store. 6. Simple items you may have in your house : paper towels, table salt, small plastic zip close bag
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
All abilities are welcome in this course. However, please be advised that some children will need parental support in the way of attention during class time, reading the instructions and scribing as needed.
