Class Experience

Students will improve thier understanding of the parts of plant while engaging in language development through large group discussion. Students will also be supported in the area of intellectual development as they will be introduced to new information about the parts of a plant and will then be asked to recall this new-found information to label the parts of their newly constructed flower. Students will also improve their physical development, specifically fine motor skills, as they use their hands to cut, glue, and paint, as well as manipulate various other art materials to create their very own flower.
I have worked with young children for over ten years in both the child care setting and in the kindergarten classroom. The format of this class follows an inquiry-based model of learning, which I have experience with in guiding and implementing with many students over the years. Our topic is plants and its parts. First, we will investigate and determine the relevant facts of this topic through video, song, print/chart form. We will then expand our knowledge through creating a model. We will then extend our learning by applying our new-found knowledge of the parts of plant to our newly created model of a flower. It's inquiry-based learning at its best and one of my favourite ways to introduce new information to young children.
Continue using your knowledge of the parts of a plant/flower by creating new and different types of flowers to display in a flowerbed. Consider searching online or in a book to learn about different types of flowers and the different colours that they showcase. Then, use your craft materials to create lots of different flowers. Next, use a container or create a flowerbed out of paper to hold all of your newly made flowers. Lastly, have fun labelling each flower by saying each part out loud. This is a great way to practise learning the parts of a plant/flower in a fun way.
