8 live meetings
6 hrs 40 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this 4-week course, students will meet twice a week for 45 minutes to learn all about different kinds of fascinating insects! As a beekeeper, I have always been amazed by the unique ways that insects have found to thrive in nature. The insect world is amongst the most diverse on Earth, and they play an important role in ecosystems across the globe. Each day we will learn about a different type of insect, and we'll fuse biology and art to learn in a fun and engaging way. I believe in the power of art as a tool for learning about the natural world, so in each class we will also be drawing the insects we will be learning about, exploring their anatomy and unique bodies as we go along. My classes are discussion-based, and I encourage and create a safe space for students to share their ideas, ask questions, and explore topics in a human-to-human, interactive setting. The class topics will be: Class 1: Ants Class 2: Honeybees Class 3: Beetles Class 4: Butterflies + Moths Class 5: Mantises Class 6: Dragonflies Class 7: Phasmids (Stick Bugs!) Class 8: Strange and Bizarre Bugs Each class will include drawing, so please have paper and drawing utensils nearby! No other materials needed.
Learning Goals
Students will explore the fascinating world of insects by learning about insect anatomy, life cycle, role in the ecosystem, and importance on Earth!

Hello! My name is Samantha and I am passionate about connecting with others and creating community through learning. I have been a teacher (pre-K through 12) at both in-person homeschooling co-ops as well as online platforms for over six years now, and I absolutely love any topics related to the environment, biology, nature sciences, art, and yoga/mindfulness/meditation. I especially believe in the power of art as a way of processing and learning information, so many of my classes are a fusion of science/biology + art.
It is very important to me that learning should be interesting and FUN! I focus on interactive classes from a large range of topics that are discussion-based, engaging, and cater to every student's needs. I have a large toolbox of methods and ideas that I use to help each student feel comfortable, safe to explore their curiosity, and connected to their learning experience.
I have a Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology as well as a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Sciences, and my passion is to share my love for the world, humanity, and this Earth with our youth. They are our future! I know that during these trying times, it is important that our children continue to learn about the world and connect with others. It is my hope to create an online community of creativity, curiosity, and connection together. Technology is a wonderful thing, and I am grateful for this platform to share and learn virtually!
