US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Through activities that promote a comprehensive world-view of geography, students will become immersed in the ecosystems of the world. Montessori puzzle maps and continent folders will help children to learn to recognize the shape and placement of each continent on both a globe and map. A simple song will reinforce the names of the continents, and overlays of the major biomes will define ecological regions. Coloring sheets and photo slideshows will introduce some of the most interesting native wildlife. Miss Amalia has volunteered with either children or animals on every continent except Antarctica, and will engage children through sharing stories, pictures, money and cultural artifacts collected from over twenty different countries. She will bring her experiences of caring for orphaned orangutans, following Komodo dragons, releasing sea turtle hatchlings, and so much more to life in this unique multi-day class experience. She also has experience assisting in Montessori classrooms, and guiding children through using Montessori materials and methods. Students will add to their own world map project each week, and simple crafts using basic art supplies will occasionally be constructed in class. Out of class supplemental materials that encourage family nature walks, scavenger hunts, art projects, science experiments, and games will be included weekly. Week 1: North America South America Week 2: Africa Eurasia Week 3: Oceania Antarctica
