Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
This class is meant to be an introduction to the nature journal as a scientific tool. Please be aware that the focus of our journals will be direct scientific observation rather than artistic expression. In our first week, I will describe how to create and use a scientific nature journal. Each subsequent week we will have a different nature focus which we will explore through a prerecorded video, journaling prompts, and a collaborative game or project. Students do not need to go on extensive nature walks in order to complete assignments. I encourage students to look at nature that can be found in their own corner of the world whether that be urban, suburban, or rural. The only prerequisite is curiosity about nature! **Class Schedule** Week 1: Getting Started - Journal Basics Week 2: Trees and Bushes Week 3: Native Plants (Weeds) Week 4: Bugs Week 5: Weather Week 6: Birds Week 7: Rocks and Dirt Week 8: Looking Closely **Class Format** Mondays – Prerecorded Video – Students should watch the video and make related direct observations throughout the week. Wednesdays – Collaborative Game or Project – Examples include nature-focused adaptations of common games such as Search-and-Find, Match the Object, and What’s Different. Fridays – Nature Journal Sharing – Students are asked to share pictures of their journals from the week and discuss their findings together. "We were all meant to be naturalists, each in his degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things.” ~Charlotte Mason, Home Education Vol 1. Ch2: Out-Of-Door Life For The Children p.61

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a Charlotte Mason home educator with a degree in English and Spanish Literature. I am passionate about science and the humanities, and am excited to share my passion for these subjects with your children!
I believe that students learn best when they do the work of learning. This means that I will do my best to put them in contact with living ideas and facilitate their journey towards a more comprehensive understanding of the subject. I want your students to participate in their own education. Rather than rote memorization, we will utilize first-hand experience and the process of narration (re-telling what they have learned from the lesson). I hope your children will leave my courses inspired and with a greater desire to continue learning!
