Natural Horsemanship Simplified (Flex)

Class
In this 10 week online flex course, we will do a deep dive on the popular training method know as "natural horsemanship". This philosophy of horse training works with the horse's instincts rather than against them.

Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
My goal is that students will be able to walk away more knowledgeable and confident in their interactions with horses. I also desire to help them with any issues they are trying to address with their horse. If I don't have an answer, I will go out and look for it! The main driving force in this class is having a basic understanding of how horse brains work and how we can utilize that to get training concepts across. Sometimes the problem with a horse is not necessarily the training technique itself, but how it's being executed and the foundation/reasoning behind it. I want to help show students how to think outside the box when it comes to horsemanship so that they can have fun and their horses are having fun.
I have over a decade of recreation, academical, and professional experience in the horse industry. As a horse owner I have passionately studied and applied horsemanship in that decade. I never profess that I have "arrived" as far as horsemanship goes, as I believe it is a life-long journey and consider myself a "horsewoman-in-progress". This class, its teacher, and the knowledge taught is released of liability because online equine training instruction is not as comprehensive as in-person instruction. There is always a risk in horse interactions, I hope in this class to teach ways to make it safer.
Homework is released the same day as the instructional material each Monday. Each Friday assignments are due. Assignments will be comprised of a questionnaire that is posted in the classroom. Questions will revolve around the subjects covered in the recording, but also conversational questions to help students in their individual situations. My hope is that these discussions will help students connect and also solidify these principles.
Pen and paper for note taking. Students are encouraged to bring their questions and scenarios. And of course, a desire to learn and a sense of humor.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will receive personalized feedback from me after they submit their questionnaire homework via private Outschool message.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Non-graphic discussion of horse-related accidents will be brought up. The goal of this class is to give students knowledge to avoid such occurrences. If you have a student that has lost their confidence due to a horse-related accident I still encourage them to attend. In this class, no one is judged for mistakes. We're all learning and want to learn how to be better next time and how to stay safe. This class has emphasis on the mental component of horsemanship, as it is the foundation for the physical component.

Canva is used for the slide presentation. No account creation necessary. Google Forms is used for questionnaires, account required. Youtube links to class material are securely embedded on the Outschool site, no account creation necessary.

Ultimately this class, its teacher, and the knowledge taught is released of liability because online equine training instruction is not as comprehensive as in-person instruction. There is always a risk in horse interactions, I hope in this class to teach ways to make it safer.

I have a few general rules that I like to abide by so our classes run smoothly:

1.	Avoid interrupting the teacher/other students. I know internet lag can cause overlap, so try to make sure the other person is done talking first to help mitigate this. Raising your hand if you have a question or comment also helps keep things orderly and gives everyone a chance to talk.

2. Participate in class in a quiet room, if possible. If there is background noise, please mute yourself unless you are speaking.

3. Per Outschool policy, parents must stay off camera and not interact with the class (this includes posing as the child in the chat and messaging functions, telling the child what to say or do, challenging/asking/interacting with the teacher). Of course, if your student is having technical difficulties you can help them. I am more than happy to interact with parents outside of class time via Outschool’s private messaging system.

4.	Do not distract the class by abusing drawing tools in Zoom.

5. Use the chat box for things relevant to class. I check it every time that it is used and if it is for goofing off it takes away time from other students who are paying attention.

6. Per Outschool policy, all students must turn on their cameras so I can confirm their identity for safety reasons. Once I have confirmed this, I have no problem with them preferring to keep the camera off.

7. If you are having internet connectivity issues, please let me know.

8. If the student will be absent for a class, please let me know ahead of time if possible so I can adjust the class accordingly.

9.	Students that are misbehaving get two warnings, then the third offense will result in the child being put in the Zoom waiting room until the class has concluded. No refunds will be given if this has occurred.
