Class Experience
In this FLEX class (it is not live), students will create a natural history museum by collecting nature artefacts. Each week they will learn about a particular nature topic, then be sent outside to hunt for a sample to include in their museum. Each Monday I will post a video lesson and nature challenge, following the topic schedule below. Students will be encouraged to share their artefacts as we go along and add to our learning community in the classroom by posting photos, questions, and discussing the themes we are covering. Week 1: Building a natural history museum box. We need a container to hold our artefacts. Instructions will be given to build a simple 8 cell container. Also, an animal challenge will be launched to find, photograph, and post the photos of interesting wildlife during the 8 weeks. We will also discuss collection safety, and what makes a good artefact choice. Week 2: The focus of this class is birds. We will learn some basics of bird biology and head out to find bird related artifacts. Week 3: The focus is shells. We will learn about different types of shells and try to find some shell artefacts. Week 4: The focus is insects. We will learn some basics about insects, then try to find some insect artefacts. Week 5: The focus is flowers. We will learn about flowers and pollination, then try to find some flower related artefacts. Week 6: The focus is mushrooms and decomposers. We will learn some basics of fungi and other decomposers, and try to find some decomposer related artefacts. Week 7: The focus is rocks. We will learn about types of rocks and minerals, including fossils, and then try to find some rock related artefacts. Week 8: The focus is seeds. We will learn about different types of seeds and seed pods, and try to find some artefacts. Wrap up: We will celebrate our findings and how much we enjoyed sharing nature together! Although the age range is 6-10, families are welcome to sign up and do the class together.
