This class is intended for students who want to learn more about natural disasters that cause mass destruction to landscapes and communities. Students of all knowledge level are welcome to join this class. In this four-class course, students will explore tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires. For each type of disaster, students will learn about what causes these natural events to occur. We will also examine some specific cases studies that demonstrate the destruction and force of these natural disasters. As well, students will discuss different strategies that communities adopt to help protect themselves from these forces of nature. Each class will follow a similar format: - Lesson presentation to explain the causes of each type of natural disaster and what occurs during these extreme events - Examples of significant events that impacted landscapes and communities - Brainstorm session of ways that people can stay safe - Kahoot to review knowledge learned Classes: Week 1: Tornadoes Week 2: Hurricanes Week 3: Wildfires Week 4: Earthquakes This course is to support student understanding in the subject of Geography.
Learning Goals
Students will gain a better understanding of natural disasters.
Students will critically consider the impacts of these events and how communities handle these circumstances.
Students will be able to explain what causes tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, and wildfires.
