Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
I will teach about the Native peoples in each region of North America. We will be learning about the Native nations both past and present, this isn't just history! I will start with a class session on our origins and cultural creation stories (taught from a secular perspective) and then teach through the regions.
Before taking this course, please take my class "Who Are Native Americans" as an introduction to Native peoples. I will use a combination of Power Point, video and lecture in class.

I will be loosely teaching from the book A Kids Guide to Native American History by Yvonne Wakim Dennis and Arlene Hirschfelder for part of the class. It is not required to own this book at home, but I highly recommend it as there are over 50 culturally appropriate crafts, activities, and recipes in the book that you can do at home. I will also be using some of my own materials that I have written.

This class is taught by a Native person and from a Native perspective. This is a lecture style class. It will be used as a prerequisite for my upcoming Native Studies class.

Week:
1 - Origins and Mesoamerica
2 - Northeast
3 - Southeast
4 - Midwest/Great Lakes
5 - Plains
6 - Great Basin and Plateau
7 - Southwest
8 - Pacific States
9 - Arctic and Subarctic

Parental Guidance
There are a few videos and images within the 9 weeks that show traditional hunting or fishing and animal processing by modern Native communities. This is part of the subsistence lifestyles of some of these communities and is done in an environmentally protective way. We also discuss some hard histories in each region. While the class is not focused on history, we do touch on topics like forced removal, the California genocide, the violence of invasion and colonization, etc.
Supply List
No extra materials are required, however I highly recommend the book A Kids Guide to Native American History by Yvonne Wakim Dennis. I will be loosely teaching through that book for part of the class.
I can email other teaching resources and book recommendations upon request.
