Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Intermediate Level
In weekly lessons, prepare for the Introduction or Beginner's Level of the 2026 National Latin exam. 75% of students received a gold or silver medal.

Most learners have completed 'So You Really Want to Learn Latin' by NRR Oulton before beginning this course.

Each week, I explain, how to compose sentences in Latin and translate Latin texts. I use 'Latin to GCSE Part 1' by Cullen and Taylor to structure lessons but I also include additional passage from Hillard and Botting and LA Wilding.

In addition to this, at the end of each lesson, I teach learners about the key dates, people and places in Roman history. I also make connections between Latin vocabulary and the English words derived from them. This builds your learner's knowledge of the world and supports their learning in history, geography and English lessons (social studies and ELA).

In last year's cohort, 75% of my students achieved a gold medal on the Introduction to Latin exam. Your learner will have the opportunity to sit the National Latin Exam in February 2026.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a qualified (certified) primary (elementary) school teacher in England for over 20 years. During that time, I have taught grammar, writing composition and Latin to hundreds of children. I mix classic literature and old-fashioned grammar with a friendly approach to help all learners find success.

In addition to this, I am finishing a master’s degree in mathematics with education at the University of Cambridge. I specialised in the teaching of abstract concepts and understanding how teachers can help pupils to excel in mathematics at school.

I am dedicated to teaching children the knowledge and skills they need for academic success. I am passionate about hard-working children whose academic potential is unnoticed in busy classrooms.
