Using developed characters from a popular anime and manga, students will learn to create a short story based on their favorite character. Students will follow the steps of the creative writing process to reach a final draft of their completed short story. Learners should expect to interact with classmates, share ideas, give and receive constructive criticism about their work and that of their peers. Students need to have background knowledge of either the manga or anime to be familiar with the developed characters. Most writing will occur outside of class. Brainstorming, critiques, and readings will occur in class, along with story mapping, plot structure, themes, dialogue, and discussions. Please expect learners to spend at least 4 hours outside of class developing and writing their story. Learners will be evaluated throughout the course for growth rather than a formal assessment at the end of the course.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
My name is Yolonda Mooney. I have spent the last twenty years in the educational realm. I have raised one child to adulthood while working in my city’s public schools. I have a BA in English and Psychology with a minor in Biblical Studies. I have taught US History, Texas History, Social Studies, English, Grammar, ESL, Writing, and lower-level Math. When my son graduated in 2012, I had the unique opportunity to step into a new level of teaching. I began teaching at a local community college. I launched my online teaching career in 2017 and continue to enjoy guiding the many learner I have all around the world.

It was at the community college that I discovered how important it is for students to be prepared for the college environment. Success in college does not come without preparation! For four years, I taught students who were not entirely prepared for the college experience. As an instructor, I developed student-centered activities to reinforce online lectures provided in a flipped classroom setting. Students explored themselves and how to work within a collaboration. I also educated students on practical applications to improve college success. I developed assignments to engage students’ learning styles and writing potentials.

I am passionate about teaching and learning. I believe in empowering students to find their own style of learning. I'm not particularly eager to lecture my students. However, I want to prepare them for the professors that do. My classes involve a mixture of in-class discussions, debating an issue, self-examination, collaboration, technology, and writing. The path to discovery is not always easy, but I try to make it fun! In most of my classes, there will be pre-class requirements.

I request that all students actively participate in my classes. Practice is part of success. My philosophy is that all children are capable of learning anything, but not all children learn in the same manner or at the same speed. I am happy to teach 1:1 classes if requested. If you don't see a time that works for your child, feel free to contact me and I can try to accommodate your schedule. I am honored to be a part of your child’s educational journey.
