Description
Class Experience
The Reading Ability Assessment (one time only, optional throughout the course) will illustrate what areas need improvement and by the end of the course the student should know, (depending on which category they started at, in the Reading Ability Assessment), TERM 1; Reading names of letters and their sounds, consonant blends, vowel blends, word families, spelling, understand syllables and phonetic knowledge. TERM 2: Cluster digraphs, compound words, linguistic tools, spelling, poetry, debates, comprehension and how to use a dictionary & thesaurus. TERM 3: Letter forming, spelling, character description, stories/compositions, dictation, formal letter writing, script writing, public speaking skills, pseudonyms, poetry and prose. The overall goal is to present a clear path, to unleashing the hidden Author and having a good grasp of English Language.
I have been a reading specialist for more than 20 years and I have been making up games since I was a teenager; so being able to design classes and games on Zoom for learners on Outschool; to help with their reading and play in their own time with their families and friends is an honour!
Homework will be: Revision for weekly spelling tests (letter recognition for younger students) Writing a review of a piece of text ( a story book or a picture for younger students) given by Nana-Bee. Journal (older students) about feelings throughout the week, to produce a class journal/story at the end of term. Homework is individually and group, no more than an hour a week.
Don't forget to bring your favourite book (for the assessment), 3- 4 sheets of A4 plain paper, 2 exercise books, pen, pencil, rubber & colouring pencils, scissors and of course puppets are always welcome!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
A written report on the Reading Ability Assessment (optional) and a progress report at the end of the course is provided; which includes what you can do at home and advice on how to move forward.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
