Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Beginner Level
Each session is 20 minutes with puppets, singing, letters and cvc words to help improve memory in order to start the journey of reading. We will meet each week; to work on reading readiness strategies using repetition; the learner will also be getting used to routine and learn zoom etiquette at the same time.
Every week the learners will interact with a different puppet with a 'circle time feel', learning the caribbean style ABC song by Nana-Bee; followed by a sing-a-long 'A the letter ah the sound' for the whole alphabet.
When we are doing bookmaking it will entail using whiteboard chat. I draw simple illustrations to make 4 page books containing 3-4 words; for the learners development as an author; as well as understanding the relationship between the alphabet letters and words.
We will also be making flash cards to help with letter and cvc recognition, also using the whiteboard.
At the end of each session a new cvc word will be given to learn, which can be used as an odd one out game at the end of 4 weeks.
Week 1 - speaking & listening; show & tell.
Week 2 - learning all the letters of the alphabet and their sounds
Week 3 - flash cards & books that we write together.
Week 4 onwards - Learning games that can be played at home, to assist with reading.
All books read in class will be books that the learners have made via the whiteboard; which will then be sent to them as a message on the classroom wall; to print out for their own use.
At the end of each class the work completed will be posted on the classroom wall, for the parent to print and laminate; for their up and coming new reader!.

Our interest in reading starts for some as young as 3 years old, as DEPENDENT readers; especially if parents are always reading. At this stage we would give our 3-year-old aspirant, lots of puzzles, painting, drawing & colouring, letter art, shopping lists, etc; because the world is surrounded by colour and shapes (the left brain sees the word as a shape and the right brain sees a picture to explain the word/sentence).

The six main catergories in reading are:
DEPENDENT (reader relies on an experienced reader for total help; like stories being read to them and lots of repetition)
EMERGENT (reader still relies on experienced reader, starts to hold book upright and turn pages of books 'pretending' to read and starts to 'scribble' and still loves repetition)
INDEPENDENT (reader has sight word recognition, knows alphabet sounds, starts to read books with repeated words, forms coherent sentences)
FLUENT (reader reads with confidence, but still needs help with unfamiliar words, uses syllables, cluster consonant digraphs, starts to use dictionary and write own stories)
EXPERIENCED (reader can read fluently without help, knows how to work out unfamiliar words using many strategies including phonic knowledge and linguistic tools, uses dictionary & thesaurus, enjoys writing own stories, articles, is a good speaker and is speed reading).
SEASONED (reader is ready to take ELA/English Language exam at high school level and above and considering higher education).
Let us not forget that reading and writing/composition go hand in hand; so, if you have a child that struggles with composition, they are 9 times out of 10 struggling with reading. Between the ages of 14 -15 years old onwards, we should be EXPERIENCED readers; transitioning smoothly into SEASONED readers; once there isn't a cognitive deficit.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a reading specialist for more than 20 years and I have been making up stories and games since I was a teenager; so being able to design stories and games for Zoom for learners on Outschool to help with their reading and play in their own time with their families and friends is an honour!
