US Grade 7 - 9
This ongoing class is ideal for students who need to improve or master their reading comprehension skills. The high interest comprehensions (covering a wide variety of topics such as - history, geography, the natural world, current affairs, biographies and science topics) challenge students to develop the core reading skills: retrieval, vocabulary, summary, inference, compare and contrast, prediction and author choice. Students will be challenged with 1, 2, 3 , 4 or 5 mark questions supporting them to understand what the question is asking them to do and how to write detailed, extended answers, and use evidence to support their answers. Lessons start by reading the comprehension (please note students are expected to read the text in full before lesson) and checking understanding - then, using chat, students answer a series of questions (exemplars are then shared with the class). Students will also answer vocabulary related questions. For the last 10 minutes of the lesson students work independently answering two questions on a worksheet which is submitted at the end of the lesson for marking and feedback. (If students do not finish in lesson time work can be completed after class and then submitted.)
