Class Experience

This 8-week course will guide learners through the first book of the Percy Jackson series with guided discussion, activities, and connections to Greek mythology. Learners will read 2-3 chapters per week in preparation for class. Class will consist of a general summary of what we read to ensure comprehension, discussion questions to dive deeper into the text, activities to connect the reading to their lives, and explanations of the Greek mythology stories introduced in those chapters. Classes will utilize Nearpod to engage learners and encourage participation and discussion.

Throughout the course, learners will make comparisons between the classic Greek mythology tales and the modern versions Riordan created in his books. Gradually, learners will create their own modernized version of a character we don't meet in the book! By the end of the class, learners will create a fully-formed character that connects Greek mythology to our modern world.

Schedule:
Week One - Chapters 1-2
Week Two - Chapters 3-5
Week Three - Chapters 6-8
Week Four - Chapters 9-11
Week Five - Chapters 12-14
Week Six - Chapters 15-17
Week Seven - Chapters 18-20
Week Eight - Chapters 21-22

As we will be reading the book together, learners need no prior knowledge of the Percy Jackson series or Greek mythology to join us! Learners will need their own copy of the book. Hard copies, digital copies, and audiobooks are all acceptable. Learners will also need a second device, such as a tablet or phone, during class to access Nearpod more easily.
